Wales for Africa "the best value Programme in this Assembly's History"
13 Mar 2009On Tuesday 10 March, the first ever Senedd debate on the Welsh Assembly Government's Wales for Africa Programme drew plaudits for the work of civil society community links throughout Wales.
Described by First Minister Rhodri Morgan AM as "the best value programme in this Assembly's 10 year history," the programme drew unstinting cross-party support, with 11 Assembly Members contributing to the debate with issues ranging from climate change to maternal mortality - but with a common thread of pursuing quality, mutually beneficial approaches to sustainable development internationally.
"I am just as proud of the fact that we are the world’s first Fairtrade Nation, as I am that we are the world seven-a-side rugby champions. This is about the Wales of the future: a confident Wales of good global citizens. Above all, I thank all the volunteers and professionals—the doers—who have really got involved." First Minister for Wales, the Right Hon. Rhodri Morgan AM
As an aside to the debate, the Welsh Assembly Government have also pledged ongoing core funding for the Gold Star Communities Project, grant scheme, and the Wales - Africa Linking Network, for the next three years from 2009-2012.
