DfID Development Awareness funding to be reviewed
22 Mai 2010The new International Development Secretary, Andrew Mitchell MP, has announced that DfID's development awareness funding programmes are to be reviewed, with some projects to be terminated with immediate effect.
'Raising awareness of development' has been DfID's policy basis for providing funding to UK-based groups and organisations over the last decade, and programmes which will potentially fall for review under this shift in policy may include schemes such as Global Schools Partnerships, International Health Links and the newly launched 'Global Community Links' among many others. Although DfID's review process has yet to be announced, we would expect that existing programmes that have already been contracted out or outsourced will be completed.
Wales Africa Community Links is funded from the Welsh Assembly Government's 'Wales for Africa' scheme, and will not be affected. First Minister for Wales Carwyn Jones has publicly stated his ongoing support for the programme and the work of Welsh civil society link groups.
Wales Africa Community Links and WCVA will be monitoring the situation closely, and keeping members and third sector partners informed. We are supporting BUILD in securing a meeting to discuss DfID's forward plans with Andrew Mitchell in June. Community groups and local organisations who are concerned at any impact these cuts may potentially pose, are strongly encouraged to raise the issue with their Member of Parliament to ensure that voices are heard.
